2007 Johnny Leathers, Jr., Memorial Golf Tournament

The Johnny Foundation would like to ask you to support the 4th annual Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) being held May 19th, 2007 at Woodmont Golf and Country Club. We have been blessed to have raised over $46,000 in the last three tournaments targeting College Student Prevention Programs in hopes of preventing just one of the suicides that tragically ends the lives of 1,100 college students every year.  Last year’s tournament helped fund AFSP’s On-line College Screening Project at Emory University. This web-based project reaches out to students with serious depression and other problems who would not otherwise have sought help. A three-year pilot test of the outreach method showed the project is effective in resolving the students concerns about treatment through engaging in anonymous online dialogues with a counselor. At-risk students who exchanged dialogues were found to be three times more likely to eventually come for an in-person evaluation and to enter treatment.   We have seen evidence that awareness does work and desperately need your help to raise awareness, give hope and reach the nearly one million people in the U.S. who attempt to end their lives every year.

2006 Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament The Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Awareness Banquet and Golf Tournament held in April  to raise awareness of depression and to promote education on suicide  prevention was blessed to have raised $16,000 for the Johnny Leathers, Jr.  Memorial Fund established at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and $1,000 being donated to an Atlanta Area Christian Counseling  Center to help fund counseling sessions for patients in need. The funds going  to AFSP will again target on-line screening of college students. Maybe if this  project had been in place when Johnny attended college we would not be  walking this journey. We can’t change the past but we pray God will use these funds to help change someone’s future.

2005 Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament

The 2005 Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Awareness Banquet and Golf Tournament was blessed to have raised $15,000 for the Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Fund of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). The funds raised will be used to help fund a confidential screening program for students at Morehouse College and Emory University by bringing awareness and counseling help directly to the students online. Your generous support may very well help provide the life line needed to save a college student’s life in the Atlanta area. The first Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Awareness Banquet was held on the eve of the tournament and was blessed with 65 dinner guests who enjoyed a gourmet meal, silent auction, delightful array of door prizes, Keynote Speaker Dr. Phil Ninan of Emory University and honored with the presence of William Grard, Development Director, at AFSP who flew in from New York City just to attend the banquet. The second Johnny Leathers, Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament was blessed with 80 players who feasted on a BBQ buffet lunch, played 18 holes on a sun drenched golf course, and enjoyed appetizers during the raffle and awards presentation. We hope you will join us next year in this ongoing effort to raise awareness and save lives.
